L8 Legionella Risk Assessment
Legionnaires’ disease is a serious and sometimes fatal illness caused by Legionella
bacteria. It is typically contracted by inhaling water droplets loaded with large amounts of the
bacteria, which often come from contaminated water systems.
Balcomm offers clear, concise Legionella risk assessments across numerous industrial and
commercial settings. Once the risks are identified, we deliver the full range of services
required to prevent Legionnaires’ Disease and ensure ACoP L8 compliance.
Where and why are L8 Legionella Risk Assessments required?
According to ACOP L8 guidelines, carrying out a thorough and adequate risk assessment is
the essential first step in preventing Legionnaires’ Disease. The goal is to identify every
water system where Legionella bacteria might grow and evaluate the likelihood of individuals
inhaling contaminated aerosols. All water systems must be included in the assessment, with
special attention given to:
- Hot and cold water systems
- Cooling water systems, cooling towers, and evaporative condensers
- Spa pools
- Spray humidifiers, misters, air washers, and wet scrubbers
- Safety showers, sprinklers, and vehicle wash systems
- Fountains and water features
- Any other system containing water where Legionella may thrive and be released in
aerosol form
